Wingman - those unsung heros
I recently got the question on “wingman” while chatting with chewyx, emp23 and jas today. Well here’s the dig on a wingman:
The Wingman was originally a term referring to the plane flying beside and slightly behind the lead plane in an aircraft formation. This formation serves the dual purpose of reducing drag and turbulence thus conserving fuel and to position the aircrafts in such a way as to enhance mutual survival in a hostile military environment – dog fight. (no brainer here). The term like all military terms have been since been adopted and evolved to mean a companion who supports the “pilot” by engaging his “target” as well as defending him against possible intruders in a hostile social environment.
Purpose of the Wingman
The purpose of the wingman is to boost his or her companion’s confidence. Wingmen must back up their pilots on picking up a member of the opposite sex. Sometimes he’s just there to kick the pilot’s butt, push him forward (literally) or analyze the failure over “teh tarik” debriefing. While not the most glorious of positions, it is certainly more fun than Friday nights at home. Wingman techniques are continuously being honed and developed. Being a tried and tested successful system, wingmen/pilot techniques have expanded from the clubs to coffee shops, bookstores and malls.
Wingman rules of engagement: (RoE)
1. Isolation
The primary purpose of the wingman is to isolate the target so that the pilot can make the kill. This is normally done by chatting up her friends or asking her to accompany him somewhere else. Sometimes this means taking the bullet for the team effort (go figure it out yourself :P).
2. Initiation
The normal practice if the wingman is gutsy and the pilot shy. In most cases this is the preferred method used by girls I’ve seen so far. This tactic involves Initializing encounter with the target by approaching her first in order to break the ice(recon or fly over target sweep).The wingman will also have to bravely face the risk of being shot down. A good wingman will successfully deflect any rejection and spare his pilot’s self-esteem.
3. Backup
In case things start to go sour, the wingman is suppose to bail the pilot out.
Well this post is dedicated to my wingman, stevie - bless you dude for going with me through all the crash-and-burn attempts. I think is so far the most political incorrect and chauvinistic filled entry I’ve made. Oh well, that’s just a glimpse into a guys world…

Now I know what Steve means when he says that he wingmans for u! An interesting writeup as I never thought that a “wingman” or “advisor” would have to do so much, inclusive of bailing the pilot out!
