Microsoft’s validation sucks big time.
Software piracy is a major concern for Microsoft. It has taken a great many steps to combat this plague, but to the point of user inconvenience is where the line should be drawn. It’s already bad enough that one needs to activate ones windoze when installing or re-activate it by calling Thailand when adding new hardware but that’s not the cause of what irks me right now cause there are walk-around.
What’s unpitching my tent is the piracy lock on two of its MS download Web sites, requiring all Windoze XP and Windoze 2000 users to validate their copy of Windoze as genuine before downloading softwares. The lock is placed on the Microsoft’s Download Center and Windows Update Web sites, which offer applications such as Windows Media Player and the new Windows AntiSpyware product as well as security updates for Microsoft products.
Now I don’t give a crap about my pc at home, which is as unsecured as hell, for P2P programs to run. (plus I’ve put it in a DMZ anyway) Linux boxes is what I prefer to work on, but while at work where my company enterprise license 6.0 agreement with MS and thus we maintain our own XP/2K image, it’s pretty annoying to validate my or my user’s to download applications.
Anyhow what’s really silly is that “Microsoft Genuine Advantage” was cracked within 24 hours of implementation by a simple method of pasting the following text to the address bar:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’)
and pressing enter before pressing the “custom” or “express” button.
